Lahaina Time: 12:32am

Lahaina, Maui was once the capital of the Hawaiian Kingdom. Today Lahaina is a popular destination for tourists and locals alike.

In Lahaina, Maui residents talk story in the shade of storefront awnings; outrigger canoes paddle past; surfers maneuver long boards across the tourist-packed sidewalks of world famous Front Street, heading to the harbor; and honeymooners sample slices of pineapple in quaint mom & pop shops or linger on restaurant balconies sipping mai tais. Lahaina Town is full of unique characters, dazzling photo opportunities, a proud and important history and the best Maui has to offer.

From Lahaina's West Maui coastline enjoy magnificent sunset views across the channel silhouetting the islands of Lana'i and Moloka'i. During the winter months, migrating humpback whales congregate in the warm offshore waters, festooning the ocean with spouts and splashing. Just as dazzling is the easterly sunrise over the West Maui Mountains, replete with rainbows and seasonal waterfalls.

When people say "Maui No Ka Oi," Maui is the best, they must be thinking of Lahaina!

Lahaina History

Historically, Lahaina and its surrounding area supported a thriving Hawaiian population. Lahaina, Maui itself was sacred and special for the Ali'i (ruling class), home of the Moku, and recognized as King Kamehameha's preferred retreat. With the introduction of Europeans it became a popular port for sailors, whalers and merchants.

Missionaries established their first Maui church here and had notorious run-ins with rowdy sailors. Eventually agriculture replaced the whaling era with sugarcane, pineapple and coffee. Contract laborers were recruited from around the world, bringing with them diverse customs and faiths. Overtime Hawaiian taro patches and fish ponds were filled in to make room for fields, roads and buildings.

Today, backed by a strong tourism industry, Lahaina is experiencing cultural revitalization and movement toward environmental preservation. Take a free tour that gives a glimpse into Lahaina's history and the pivotal events that unfolded right here along Lahaina's Front Street.
