Lahaina Shopping

Lahaina's shops are an eclectic mix of cheap tourist knick knacks, fine arts and Maui-made crafts, chain stores and unique mom & pops. If you want gifts for colleagues, a Hawaiian bib for the baby, a surfboard, sunglasses, Hawaiian jewelry or a super expensive original painting for the wall-Lahaina is your town! Furniture shopping, automobiles, department stores (like cosmetics), pet stores and formal wear are limited so head to Kahului for those needs.

Spend a cloudy day or quiet afternoon ambling along Front Street. Be prepared that it can be crowded and the sidewalks are narrow, making it difficult for wheelchairs and baby strollers-not impossible, just cumbersome. Late afternoons can be hot, as the sun shines directly into the storefronts. This is the best time to find a cool, shady spot and enjoy an ice cream cone or cold drink. We suggest Kimo's for a mai tai or a slice of ice cream "hula pie."

Don't forget to explore Lahaina's various shopping malls (which receive far less foot traffic) and make special trips off the beaten path to shop at specialty stores. Here Lahaina's unique personality shines through.

Mall shopping is easy, with convenient parking and shops all in the one place. But not all the malls are created equal!

505 FRONT STREET

On the southern end of Lahaina Town, this eclectic collection of shops and offices in the historic area of Moku'ula, fronts a breathtaking beach. Not always rented to capacity, some of the shops appear to be limping along but the mainstay restaurants like Pacifico's and the little boutiques make it a worthy venture. There is a spa here, a nail salon, a sushi bar, a surf school and several galleries. Scattered throughout the shopping complex are traditionally carved canoes from the International Festival of Canoes. Pay parking is available in the underground garage or open lot across the street.

THE WHARF CINAMEA CENTER

A collection of small eateries and tourist shops are anchored by the Blue Lagoon Bar at the bottom of this open, old wooden multi-level mall and topped off with a three screen cinema operated by Wallace Theatres. Amongst its fifty air-conditioned shops is a postal office, ATM and the fifties-theme Cool Cats restaurant. The Wharf Cinema Center at 658 Front Street is across from the Banyan Tree and near the Harbor. Validated parking is available in a pay lot behind the complex. This is also where the shuttle picks up enroute to the Cannery Mall and Whalers Village.

OLD LAHAINA CENTER

The Old Lahaina Center is a jumbled collection of strip mall islands in a vast sea of paid parking (two hour validation with purchase). Here you will find the Post Office, Foodland, Starbucks, a drycleaners, the Maui Theater featuring "Ulalena," KFC, Cilantro's Mexican Fast Food, the Thai Chef restaurant and more. Located at 845 Waine'e Street and across from the "Lahaina Center" on 900 Front Street.

LAHAINA CENTER

Best recognized for its street facing businesses such as Hilo Hattie's, Hard Rock Cafe, Warren & Annabelle's Magic Show and Ruth Chris; this outdoor mall is quiet with many empty store fronts. There is a four-plex Wallace theater in the interior, Bikram's Yoga and Glow Putt. A historical replication of a Hawaiian Hale is plunked down in the middle of its large pay parking lot (two hours validation with purchase). Free hula shows and performances are held here.

LAHAINA CANNERY MALL

Lahaina's only indoor air-conditioned mall, home to a 24 hour Safeway and Longs Drugs. There is a traditional mall-style food court, free hula shows performed at 7:00 pm every Tuesday and Thursday, as well as a Keiki (Children) Hula Show at 1:00 pm on Saturdays and Sundays. Some of the shops include Banana Wind (a cool island-style gift store), Borders Express, Maui Dive Shop, ProfessioNAIL and Honolua Surf Company. Compadres Mexican restaurant offers breakfast, lunch and dinner. Parking is free and a shuttle bus stops here between the Wharf Cinema Center and Whalers Village. A new mall is currently under construction across the highway.

WHALERS VILLAGE

North of Lahaina by ten minutes, this is the West Side's high-end shopping offering stores like Tiffany's and Coach. Right on Ka'anapali beach, with fine dining and a casual food-court, Whalers Village's open-air mall showcases the enormous skeleton of a whale and some other interesting artifacts. While most of the stores are chains and name brands, this mall does offer the cleanest and nicest facility. Tommy Bahamas, Cinnamon Girl and Blue Ginger are island favorites. Pay parking is adjacent (two hours free with validation) and Whalers Village is on the shuttle line.

Because real life goes on, even when you are on vacation…here is a quick list of helpful stores.

Foodland

Located in the Old Lahaina Center, this typical grocery store has a large hot and cold deli section, fresh flower leis and a small but adequate health food and organic/gourmet items.

(808) 661-0975

Nagasako Variety Store

A longtime local general store, this family operation has downsized to very little space. Great for local style products and ethnic treats. Located in Old Lahaina Center.

Whalers General Store at 505 Front Street

Past the typical tourist gadgets and gizmos is a small grocery section that will meet your last minute needs for breakfast or a simple snack.

Safeway at the Cannery Mall

Just like the mainland, however; don't be shocked if the shelf is empty because the barge didn't come in. Best to avoid around rush hour, as the checkout lines can back up a good fifteen minutes or more. Some florals and fresh seafood.

(808) 667-4392

Longs Drugs at the Cannery Mall

A full pharmacy, camera center, cosmetics, greeting cards, local produce and groceries. With a little bit of everything from liquor, electronics, paper products, gardening and sewing this is your best bet.
